It’s cup finals all way for Sol

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager Sol Campbell says his team need to treat every game like a cup final as they look to move out of the relegation zone.

Campbell suffered a defeat in his first league game in charge on Saturday, with Macc suffering a narrow 1-0 loss away to third placed Colchester United.

It means the Silkmen remain bottom of the League Two table, six points from safety, and Campbell has stressed just how important each of their upcoming matches are.

“It’s cup finals for us all the way. We have just got to keep on believing, keep on working hard, and keep on trying to do the right things,” he told the club’s official website.

It’s been really good to see the guys respond to what we’re trying to do with our philosophy and to roll our sleeves up and keep going.

“We worked really hard against Colchester and we had some good chances to pull the score back to 1-1. They’re riding high and are a top side, so for us it was a good performance in the sense that it gave me great belief that the guys have got more to come.

“It’s always hard to take, but I think for us it is how we responded. That’s what’s key to me. I felt that the guys put their heads down whereas a month ago it would have been a different story.

“We’re making them think and the players are responding, so we have just got to keep working hard.

“That gives me great belief and great pride that the guys kept on going, kept on trying to do the right things but now we have got to look at the game a bit more and tweak a few things in our play and our approach, and that is key for us.

“I think in the last third we have just got to get our front line in more when it comes to fluid play, but this team is riding high and we have still got a couple of guys on the floor, so that just shows you that we are going in the right direction, we are working.”

Up next for Macclesfield

‘It’s cup finals for us all the way. We just have to keep on believing’

is Campbell’s first home game in charge, as they welcome Crawley to the Moss Rose on Saturday.

Crawley are in 16th place in the table, having won eight, drawn two and lost ten of their 20 games so far this season. They head into the match with the Silkmen on the back of a defeat, after a 1-0 home loss to Northampton Town last weekend.

Victory for Macclesfield would see them leapfrog second bottom Notts County in the table, as long as County are beaten in their game at home to Tranmere Rovers.
