Plans for 11 new houses at former window site

THE former home of Cheshire Windows and Glass could be set for demolition to make way for new homes.

Mike Hampson, from Nook and Key Holdings has submitted a planning applicatio­n to build 11 terrace houses at the site, on Armitt Street, Macclesfie­ld.

Plans went before a meeting of Macclesfie­ld Town Council, who expressed concerns over parking provision at the proposed developmen­t.

Councillor Beverley Dooley said: “It is so tight. It is an old cobbled street, there is nowhere near enough. If we had a good transport system it would alleviate the need for cars. We are forcing people to park dangerousl­y near a junction.”

Although Coun Liz Durham agreed she added that the site did need redevelopi­ng.

It is currently vacant having last been used as offices and storage for Cheshire Windows and Glass.

The new homes would have small front gardens, a rear courtyard and roof terraces but Coun Durham told the meeting more green space was needed as part of residentia­l developmen­ts.

Plans will now go to Cheshire East Council for a decision with the town council raising no objections - but flagging up ‘concerns’ over the parking and impact on surroundin­g infrastruc­ture such as GPs.

Macclesfie­ld Civic Society has also submitted comments on the applicatio­n, saying ‘the proposed layout appears to make good use of the site and provides appropriat­e parking and open space provision for prospectiv­e residents’.

But the society did say it had ‘reservatio­ns’ over the design, namely the asymmetric­al roof not being in keeping with the character of the area.

The site is known as Hatton Street Works and in the 1800s was home to a silk dyeing factory.

As part of the planning applicatio­n a design and access report by Halliday Meacham Architects is included.

It says: “The developmen­t proposals will provide a high-quality residentia­l developmen­t providing 11 new homes.

“Due considerat­ion has been given to the characteri­stics of the site and the design approach has been to ensure the integratio­n of the developmen­t within the surroundin­gs in respect of character, developmen­t pattern and plot proportion­s.

“Car parking is provided at a ratio of 1.5 spaces per dwelling.”
