Steve has the Edge in Simister Cup

THE latest round of the Simister Cup at Alderley Edge was won by Steve Bennett with a fantastic haul of 22 points for nine holes.

In the Winter League Edge pro Charles le Sueur and the Captain took on defending champions Chris Edwards and Nigel Pugh in a typically close contest Charles and Captain got off to a fast start being three up after five holes with two birdies and two eagles.

But the holders came back well to take a one-hole lead after 17 holes but the Captain got on the 18th green in two shots and used his one-shot advantage to salvage a half and set up a big match in the following week against third placed Rick Ford and Brian Foden.

A 4 -man am am at Macclesfie­ld needed a cpo on 85 points to take tha fab four of Andy Powell, Chris Priestley, Paul Tovee and Tim Robinson into top spot from Terry White, Mike Oakes, Paul Kimpton and Stuart Gatward and hot on their heels with 84 were Tom Rigby, Huw Jones, Jonathan Earl and Jack D’Arcy.

A Roll Up Stableford for Macclesfie­ld ladies was won by new member Hilary Elsworth with 20 points from Lady Captain Myra Clark, Jenny Moore and Kay Atkin, all 17.

Midweek Stableford action at Avro saw the familiar name of Peter Walker on top with 42 points, two more than Neil Flood and Derek Abbott.

Leslie Fowler was out on his own in another Stableford at Avro with 43 points from Karl O’Sullivan, Vic Tarr, Michael Thornber, Neil Flood and Peter Walker, all 37.

Avro serial winner Peter Walker did it again as he won a Midweek Stableford with 41 points from Neil Flood 38 and Michael Thornber and Derek Ellershaw, both 38.

In a Seniors Stableford at Avro Peter Walker was again first past the post with 40 points from Royce Lowis 39 and Tony Miller and Derek Jones, both 37.

The Walker monopoly was finally broken in a singles Stableford topped by Michael Thornber 42 from Karl O’Sullivan 37 and Peter Walker 34.

A Progressiv­e Seniors Stableford at Styal had the top trio of B and N Appleby and K Dawson on top with 73 points, three more than A Lee, R McCabe and S Weaver and M Collier, P Lawday and C Baillie.

Division one honours in a Saturday Stableford at Styal saw star junior Sam Hall leading in with 39 points, two more than Ken Mayoh, David Graham, Mike Burchell and David Murray.

Top of division two with 39 points was John Hall with 39 points ahead of Lee O’Connell 38 and Simon Elms 37.

Robert Hughes was out on his own in a Sunday Stableford at Styal with 39 points well clear of Fiona Rae 35 and John McBryer 33.

Styal Lady Captain Mel hill led from the front in the latest Ladies Winter League Stableford posting 22 points to finish ahead of Christine Buxton 21 and Enid Laverty 18.
