Flipping ‘eck big race is on again

-

THE famous Macclesfield Pancake Race will take place again this year and entries are now open.

Shrove Tuesday comes late in 2019 so the event takes place in the town centre on March 5.

Competing relay teams will race up and down Mill Street outside the town hall while tossing pancakes.

And organisers are now inviting businesses, clubs and organisations to take part and raise money for ECHO - the official charity of East Cheshire NHS Trust.

Last year’s event enjoyed a record turnout with a total of 18 teams doing battle despite poor weather and this time it is hoped the later date will encourage even more and yield better conditions.

Registration is £20 per team and there is no minimum sponsorship amount.

Instead organisers simply ask that team members aim to raise as much money for ECHO

A number of prizes will be on offer – including one for best fancy dress - and local radio station Silk FM will be on hand to compere and keep the crowds entertained.

Fiona Doorey, ECHO’s fundraising manager, said: “The pancake race is great fun and a fantastic way for local businesses and organisations to promote themselves and raise funds for a good cause at the same time.

“Fancy dress is not compulsory but it’s certainly a staple fixture of the day so I’m looking forward to seeing some creative costumes!”

Registration takes place outside the town hall at 10.30am and the first race is at 11am.

The races should be completed by 1pm at the latest so they can be fitted around the working day.

Pans and pancakes will all be provided on the day for competitors.

As in previous years, local Rotarians will be stewarding the event and Cheshire East Council and Macclesfield Town Council are assisting with barriers, street management and other arrangements.
