Girls prove to be great hall-rounders

-

PERFORMANCES by the Macclesfield Harriers under 11 girls athletics team over the winter earned them a place in the North West Sportshall League Final at Widnes on January 20.

Teams from all around Cheshire, Greater Manchester, North Wales and Liverpool competed in rounds in Widnes, Crewe and Liverpool.

Only the top five finishing teams go through to the final.

Sportshall is an indoor form of athletics in which youngsters under the age of 15 compete in traditional field and track events in adapted forms which are suitable for the indoor arena.

At the final the girls competed at events they’d mastered during the League, including 2 lap and 4 lap races, 2 lap relay, chest push (throw), speed bounce, vertical jump, standing long jump and standing triple jump.

The final also had extra events in it compared to the previous rounds such as ‘soft’ (foam) javelin, over/under relays and a non-scoring ‘grand prix’ which was like a battle over an obstacle course!

The team finished fourth of five teams overall and can all be very proud of their performances.

Rachel Butterworth took first place in the chest push.

“Achieving first place in chest push was amazing! I had missed some training earlier in the season because I burnt my foot, so to take part in these competitions was great.

“Sporthall athletics is lots of fun, you can try out lots of new things and find you are good at events you didn’t think you could do!

“Our team did really well even though we didn’t win the finals. I am extremely proud of all the girls and our great coaches.”
