Macc boss Sol slams alleged homophobic abuse at game
MACCLESFIELD Town manager Sol Campbell has condemned the alleged homophobic abuse he was subjected to during his side’s 3-2 loss at Cheltenham Town.
The FA are now investigating complaints made over alleged homophobic abuse targeted at Campbell, with some Cheltenham fans contacting their club to complain while others have condemned the alleged behaviour on social media.
Cheltenham issued a statement following the game urging supporters to make sure ‘everyone is treated fairly and with respect’ at the JonnyRocks Stadium.
Comments from Cheltenham fans on Twitter said the abuse was ‘horrendous’ and ‘disgusting’ with one supporter commenting that the stewards ‘didn’t seem to do anything’.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Campbell said: “I think it’s a sad affair to have this vile noise chanted at me with no remorse to how my wife, children and I must feel.
“The perpetrators who carried out this criminal offence should be brought to justice and not feel that they have got away with this.
“If I hadn’t spoken to my friend who was in the crowd, this would have been swept under the carpet.”
Arsenal legend Campbell, appointed manager at Moss Rose in November with the Silkmen at the foot of League Two, was full of praise for the way in which the allegations have been dealt with by both clubs.
He said: “I have to say Cheltenham Town FC and Macclesfield Town FC have been swift with their responses and investigations into the incident.
“Football grounds should be places for people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy watching football in a safe and secure environment where everyone is welcomed.
“This conversation about the sometimes disgusting football ground behaviour keeps rearing its ugly head. I believe that we can all work together for a brighter future.”
The game took place on Saturday, January 26.
