This year’s international challenge hits new heights
IF your New Year’s resolutions included a pledge to take on a challenge, then East Cheshire Hospice may have just the solution.
Following on from last year’s highly successful trek across the Grand Canyon, the international challenge this year move to the Himalayas.
The 12-day adventure in October will include a trek through the Nepalese countryside, staying in local teahouses along the route.
It will also include two days assisting at a hospice care project in Kathmandu on a range of tasks such as painting, gardening, decorating and offering educational support about palliative care.
Beth Candy, hospice fundraiser who took part in the Grand Canyon trek last October, said: “Last year we raised an amazing £50,000 after the Californian trek so we knew we had to come up with something special this year.
“It was one of the most spectacular and remarkable things I’ve ever done in my life.
“I just know that this year’s trip will be amazing for our 2019 hospice team.”
Following two days of helping at the hospice, the group will then take on a five-day trek, walking for between five and eight hours every day.
Awe-inspiring views are promised, including the snowy peaks of the Annapurnas Massif which contains the 10th highest mountain in the world – Annapurnas Main.
The trek will be accompanied by first aid trained local guides who have an excellent knowledge of hiking in the region and a team of assistant guides and porters who will make the journey less arduous.
Accommodation during the trek will be in locally-owned teahouses, or lodges.
Beth said: “Our trekkers will have a chance to experience the ‘real’ Nepal by staying in local homes which, I understand, are heated by a yak dung burning stove!
“Something different for sure.
“Last year’s challenge to the Grand Canyon was exactly that for me.
“I really had to push myself but it was a brilliant adventure and, I must admit, I’m tempted to sign up for Nepal”.
Temperatures in the region are expected to get up to 25C during the day and could drop to -5C in the evening.
Each participant will be asked to raise a minimum of £3,500 for the trip, which takes place from October 12 to October 23.
The fundraising team are planning an information event later in the year.
