Scouts close in on £60k target for hut revamp
MEMBERS of a Scout group are moving ever closer to a fundraising goal of £60,000 to extend and refurbish their hut.
The Third Upton Priory Scouts want to carry out the work to their base on Whiston Street, in Macclesfield town centre.
Around £40,000 has been raised and this has been supplemented by a £3,500 donation from the Co-op’s Local Causes scheme.
In addition, the Scouts have also held a quiz night at Mottram St Andrews village hall, where around 130 guests were tested on general knowledge and current affairs.
This raised an impressive £1,400 and on the night longstanding Scout leader Richard Hodges was presented with an award for merit, in recognition of his dedicated and outstand- ing 20 years of service to the troop.
There are currently around 120 youngsters who are members of the troop, aged between 6 and 14, and they are supported by 20 adult volunteers.
Among the guests on the night was Macclesfield MP David Rutley, who said: “I was pleased to join families and supporters of 3rd Macclesfield Upton Priory Scouts for the annual quiz night and to learn of the encouraging progress being made towards refurbishing and expanding the scout hut.
“There are so many great opportunities for both young people and adults to learn new skills, make friends and get outdoors through Scouting, and I hope more local residents will get involved with this positive movement.”
