Shrigley Hall duo’s charity pairs win

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

THE Derek Horsey Charity Pairs Competition began in 1994 as the brainchild of the late Derek Horsey, a relative of European Tour star David Horsey.

Derek was synonymous with seniors’ golf in the region and with the support of participating clubs it quickly built up and since its inception has raised £46k for North West Charities.

Each participating club holds a qualifying competition to choose their representative pair and at Shrigley Hall this raised £145 for the Captain’s Charity and it was won by Alan Pengelly and Alan Smith.

In the KO stages, where the away side starts one up on the first tee, they went on to beat pairs from Poulton Park (away), Manchester (home), Glossop (home), Houldsworth (away) and Dukinfield in the final at the neutral venue of Marple with the competition raising £1000 for the charities.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley had Peter Trussell in charge with 36 points from Rod Scott 35, Steve Henshall 34 and Edwin Green 33.

The monthly medal at Shrigley had John Stewart on top of division one with a neat 69 taking him two clear of Gary Bresnahan and Dave Reddy.

In division two Michael Lisle also posted 69 to finish ahead of Michael Gibbons 73, Peter Duffy 74 and Martin Jackson 75.

Avro star Peter Walker showed his class again as he won the Midweek Stableford with 40 points ahead of Kenneth Morrison 39 and Graham Turnock 36.

But in a seniors Stableford Peter had to be content with his 38 pointer putting him in third place behind Frank Cawood 40 and Derek Jones 39.

A Two from Three Team Stableford at Davenport was led in by the hot trio of C Burns, A Dyke and K Martin with 60 points, two more than S Rawton, A Davidson and P Marland and R Lamb, J Thornhill and the peerless Trevor Glover.

A Midweek medal at Mottram Hall saw club legend David Owen win a cpo on 69 from Trevor Rathbone. One less than Shok Mirza.

Medal action at Mottram had Lewis Battersby on top of division one with 66, two less than Graham Webb and Neil Duckworth.

In division two David Owen again showed his enduring class with a stunning 62 seeing him home from Sam Stapleton 64 and Nigel Woods 67.

Styal seniors played a Regressive Team Stableford and leading in with 84 points were P Lawday, R McCabe and C Baillie, four more than A Townsend, R Vaal and C Senior.

In a Saturday Stableford at Styal soccer legend Ifti Ahmed was out on his own in division one with 42 points, four more than Tom Bloor and David Campbell.

In division two Jon Edmondson was equally emphatic with 43 points, six ahead of Eddie Birchenough and Kevin Doherty.

The latest Ladies Winter League at Styal was a tight contest with Enid Laverty first past the post with 22 points closely followed by Sue Grange and Pat Chadwick, both 21 and Helen Billington and Mel Hill, both 20.

In a Pro’s 9-hole Stableford at Alderley Edge the divisional winners were Gavin Elly with 18 points and Bernie Cummings 22.

The Winter League at Alderley Edge sees Brian Foden and Rick Ford take control after beating Captain and pro Charles le Sueur 4/3.

The title race sees Brian and Rick uncatchable if they win their remaining games but still in the hunt are Captain and pro, Gary Johnstone and Mike Davies, Dan Featherstone and Garry Olsen, Craig Aston and Dave Lee and Simon Edbury and Chris Hills.
