Shaun’s in to sharpen up Macc youngsters

-

FOOTBALL legend Shaun Goater is excited about the future after joining the coaching staff at Macclesfield Town Under 18s.

The former Manchester City striker is working with the youngsters in order to help them in front of goal, and he’s looking forward to getting stuck in.

“I’ve got a lot of knowledge to offer, so why not? We’ve been talking over the past few months but it wasn’t right in terms of different things I had on, now it just feels right. I’m excited because they’ve got good energy and they’re enthusiastic,” he said. “They’re coming up against teams sitting and are hard to break down, so I’m bringing knowledge on how to overcome that. The early signs are they’re a good bunch and they want to learn.

“I’m excited and I’ve always wanted to coach. They have the chance to win some trophies soon, and whenever you can win something you have to try your best. I still remember winning trophies at school! So it’s important to keep these memories.”

The 48-year-old scored 260 goals in an illustrious 17 year career - 103 of which came during a devastating five and a half year spell with City between 1998 and 2003. He also played for the likes of Rotherham United, Bristol City and Reading.

He is the latest big name to join Macclesfield, after Sol Campbell was appointed as manager in November, and ex-Manchester United striker Andrew Cole also joined the coaching staff a few weeks later.
