Stop climbing mountains: Sol

- RICHARD PARTINGTON

MACCLESFIELD Town manager Sol Campbell says it feels like his side are climbing Mount Everest and constantly shooting themselves in the foot after their 3-3 draw against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

The Silkmen had to come from behind on three occasions against their Chesire rivals to rescue a point in the game at the Moss Rose.

While Campbell was glad to get something from the clash, he thinks his side need to work harder to ensure they can pick up victories in matches.

“It wasn’t good for the blood pressure. It was a very entertaining game, but for us we are climbing Mount Everest by giving goals away. In the last two or three games we have shot ourselves in the foot on many occasions,” he said.

“I think really as a team we’ve just got be a lot more focused on the starts.

“We’re all trying our best and I think we just need to kind of look at the details, look at what the players are doing and just, from back when I used to play, expect the unexpected.

“That’s what I used to do and I used to feel like I am playing against the best forward in the world and he can do every single thing.

“I used to say to myself I’ve got to mark and do absolutely everything in my kind of powers and calculate everything what comes through, and that’s it.

“Instead of thinking well, that forward is not going to make that run or the midfielder is not going to run – just things like that, you’ve got to expect the unexpected and we’ve got to look at that.

“In the last dying moments we’re not following our runs.

“I’m not sure about their penalty but for their first goal we weren’t tracking our runners and we were not talking across the line.

“We can’t keep giving teams at least two goals, but we responded really well though and we scored a fabulous goal.”

The result against Crewe keeps 23rd placed Macclesfield second from bottom in the League Two table, one point adrift from safety.

Campbell’s men are now three games without a victory, but they’ll try to get back to winning ways when they take on play-off contenders Colchester United.

John McGreal’s side are in fourth place, after picking up 52 points from their 32 games so far this season.

They head into the match with Macclesfield after two straight wins, including a 3-0 win over Cheltenham over the weekend.

Colchester were victorious when the two teams met in the reverse fixture at the JobServe Community Stadium earlier this season, picking up a 1-0 win after Mikael Mandron’s first half strike.
