Police get praise for catching speeder

- ALEX SCAPENS

POLICE in Macclesfield have been praised for the most surprising of reasons – catching a speeding motorist and issuing a fine.

Officers from the Macclesfield Central team were at Bond Street – a largely residential road often used as a route to avoid busier ones – and clocked a driver at 42mph.

But rather than get a flood of people complaining about not catching ‘real criminals’ the team have been widely commended.

Residents on Bond Street say they are fed up of motorists travelling past their homes at dangerously high speeds.

Sandra Holland said: “I live on Bond Street and it’s very concerning the speeds some people travel at.

“Especially as we have a primary school and lots of little side roads, often where you have to edge out slowly to see/hear oncoming vehicles due to the parked cars. Keep up the good work!”

Joe Wolverson said: “Well done. Must be like shooting fish in a barrel on Bond Street. Crazy road to drive quickly on.”

Stephan Barstead added: “Good work, do a few more and publish them. Might deter future idiots.”

Stephanie Miller said: “I also live in the Bond Street area. The speeds the people come down that road at is shocking.

“Narrow road with parking both sides all the way up, why would anyone speed up or down?”

The reaction came after police posted on Facebook with the news.

Other areas were also mentioned as places that should be targeted for speed enforcement and these included Kendal Road, Brocklehurst Avenue, in Hurdsfield, Moss Lane and Prestbury Road.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “I understand people’s opinions of speed enforcement is varied and some despise us for it.

“But it is all about saving lives and making our roads a safer place to be.”

Over the past couple of weeks police speed enforcement has been carried out in other area of Macclesfield.

Officers were outside Adlington Primary, on Brookledge Lane, a 30mph zone, and found five people speeding - including one driver travelling at 50mph.

Another five were caught on Buxton Road West and Market Street, in Disley, and eight on the A537 Buxton Road.

But a patrol on London Road North, Poynton, found no speeding drivers.
