Drop-in meeting in aftermath of flood emergency

- ALEX SCAPENS

ADROP-IN meeting will be held as residents bid to get answers in the aftermath of the flooding emergency.

Poynton was among the areas that were particularly badly hit and there will be a drop-in held at Poynton Civic Hall, Park Lane, on Thursday, August 15, from 1pm to 7pm.

Residents will be able to ask questions about the

response to the flooding, which was declared a major incident, as well as get information and advice about protecting themselves in future and recovery work that is taking place.

Representatives from the Environment Agency, Cheshire East Council, United Utilities and the fire service will be there.

A council spokesman said: “The council is committed to keeping residents safe and would urge anyone who has concerns or questions about the recent floods to attend this week’s event.

“Council officers, together with our partners, will be available to talk to residents about flood resilience, as well as to provide further information about the ongoing recovery efforts.”

Flash flooding was caused in Poynton, and other areas including Adlington and Bollington, on July 31. Over five days 150mm of rain fell.

The drop-in will also have information about the Environment Agency’s flood warning service and how to get involved in local volunteer work to improve the riverside environment.

Council highways officers are working to repair roads in the area with some needing large-scale reconstruction.

Gully emptying, jetting and road sweeping is also ongoing in affected areas but three roads remain closed.

They are Moggie Lane, Higher Poynton, because of damage to the road and bridge, Ingersley Road, Bollington, which was badly flooded and where a culvert collapsed, and Crooked Yard Road, Macclesfield Forest, which has flood damage to the carriageway.

Each has a signed diversion route.

At Poynton Town Council’s request, Cheshire East Council has delivered 250 sandbags to Poynton Civic Hall and supplemented these with loose sand and empty sandbags.

The council’s own supply of sandbags has been replenished and these can be distributed upon request.
