Consistenc­y pays as Judy picks up prize

MACCLESFIE­LD Golf Club ladies enjoyed a great day for their Lady Captain Myra Clark’s Day.

It was a most enjoyable occasion, the golf course was in great condition, the weather was kind and Myra’s hospitalit­y was much appreciate­d.

The halfway house certainly revitalise­d some players with the cakes and the later players enjoyed something stronger.

There was a good attendance for the evening dinner and presentati­on and a good time was had by all.

The winner of the main Lady Captain’s Prize, with a nett 72, was Judy Mutter – a very consistent player and it was the first time that she won the Lady Captain’s Prize.

Next in was Heidi Worthingto­n with Sue Orwin third.

Wendy Higgins had the best gross of 90 and the Past Captain’s Prize was won by Kay Atkin and division two was won by Fran Wilbraham who was also nearest the pin on the 18th with Gill Evans winning the putting prize.

The juniors had played earlier in the season for the Lady Captain’s Prize and it was won by Daisy Ward with a fine score of 66.

Avro’s men played for the Vice Captain’s Trophy and Peter Walker led in with 70, two less than Mark Brookes, Phil Normanton and Ian Anderson.

A Midweek Stableford

at Avro saw Chris Robinson in firm control with 37 points ahead of Peter Walker 24 and Stephen Callaghan and Ken Fairfield, both 32.

There was some good scoring at Alderley Edge in a 9-hole Stableford led by Tom Ricketts with 24 points taking him clear of Max Ekstein 22 and Dan Feathersto­ne 20.

Edge’s ladies played a Team of Three Stableford and the hot trio of O Davies, S Kendrick and M Hall were out on their own with a superb haul of 78 points.

Next in on 68 were B Evans, J Ricketts and C Roberts 68 and M Monk, F Anderson and J Walker 45.

A Singles Stableford at Davenport was won by Jonathan Aitken with 40 points and chasing hard were Einar Merrygold and Liam Glennon 39 and Andy Milne 38.

Davenport ladies were in Par action and in division one Joy Leary was first past the post with +2 from Pauline Hague level par.

In division two Denise Emery won with level par from Gillian Garbett -2 and in division three Margie Ford won with +1 from Beryl Nolan and Deirdre Newman, both -1.

It was a family affair at Mottram Hall in a midweek Stableford with Trevor Rathbone on top with 67 from Hannah Rathbone 70 and Eric Baker 71.

A midweek Stableford for Prestbury’s men was won by Mark Beesley with a neat haul of 42 points seeing him two clear of Neal Shepherd, Elliot Kirton and Paul Manning.

Prestbury ladies played the President’s Day medal and Amy Anson was a proud winner with 72 from Yvonne Dodd 73 and Kim Mortimer and Josephine Harrison, both 75.

The accompanyi­ng 9-hole Stableford was won by Barbara Newton with 15 points, one more than Nan Coates.

The Wednesday Roll Up at Shrigley Hall was led in by Richard Park with 21 points from John Trinder 20.

The Thursday Stableford at Shrigley was a close contest led in by Roger White with 37 points from Gill Kershaw 36 and Dean Powney and Brian Williams, both 35.

Styal Seniors played a white tee medal and it needed a cpo on 68 to see Nick Gillings win from Roger McCabe and Steve Walker, one more than Paul Jones.

In a Wednesday Stableford at Styal Jim Leonard posted an impressive 63 to lead in from Ian Thomason 65, Ged Stevens 66 and Tom Walker, Sam McCleod. Anton Bardsley and James Lister, all 67.

The Friday Frolics at Styal needed a cpo on 22 points to give top spot to Jake Foster from Ray Auton. One more than Tom Walker and David McKee.

The latest round of the Ladies Summer Cup at Styal was won by Celia O’Donohue with 20 points.

Prestbury star Bel Wardle has been selected for the England Ladies team to play in the home internatio­nals at Downfield in Scotland.

The 19-year-old +6 handicappe­r who has enjoyed a great season will be looking to see England beat hosts Scotland who won the title in Ireland in 2018.

Delamere Forest Golf Club was a magnificen­t stage for the Cheshire Seniors Strokeplay Championsh­ip providing a tough golfing challenge on Day One of the 36-hole competitio­n with a CSS of 74.

Cheshire Seniors Captain Gareth Bradley (Bramhall Golf Club) was the top man with a neat 71 taking him clear of Euan Dunbar (Vale Royal Abbey) 72, matchplay champion Martyn Grimley (Ringway) 74 and Dave Baker (Crewe), John Williams (Prestatyn), Robin Akehurst (Vicars Cross) and Neil Waite (Vicars Cross) all 75.

But day two was washed out by heavy rain so the championsh­ip was decided on the first round scores with Gareth Bradley declared as the champion from Euan Dunbar.

The age group prizes were 65+ nett John Nono (Ringway) 71 and gross Roy Smethurst (Crewe) 76, 60-64 years nett Murray Waters (Bromboroug­h) 72, gross Dave Baker 75, 55-59 years nett Marc Bright (Prenton) 69, gross Martyn Grimley 74.

Stockport Golf Club provided a great venue for a vital Northern Seniors League match between Cheshire and Yorkshire.

Cheshire had won their two opening games against Cumbria and Northumber­land and looked in good shape to take out the White Rose as they led 4-2 after the morning foursomes.

There were halves for Ray Hughes and Chris Mitchelson and Don Campbell and Andrew Hill.

Cheshire Captain Gareth Bradley and match-play champion Martyn Grimley were hit by four birdies in the last five holes to go down on the final hole.

Cheer for Cheshire came with wins from Martin France and Euan Dunbar 2-1, Dave Nelson and Steve Blakeway 2 up and John Williams and Martin Keates 3/2 to put them in the driving seat.

The Betterball matches saw Yorkshire on fire in the early games as they posted three wins but Cheshire had the sting in the tail with wins for Martin France and Euan Dunbar 4/3 and John Williams and Martin Keates 2up with a vital half from Dave Nelson and Steve Blakeway ending a superb match at 9-9.
