Langley increase woe for Woodford

LANGLEY entertaine­d relegation threatened Woodford at the weekend and ran out convincing winners as they look to finish third in Cheshire Cricket League 3.

Rain saw the match reduced to 39 overs aside. Woodford surprising­ly elected to bowl first but got off to a good start as the bowlers dominated the early stages, they were eventually rewarded

when Bennet trapped Zak Howdle 1 LBW, Chris Pattison 5 soon followed when he was caught behind as Langley struggled to 28-2 off 12 overs .

Olly Wheelton joined Robin Smith, both had shaky starts and rode their luck. However the batsman soon took control, seeing off the opening bowlers, the duo dominated the bowlers.

The pair ran well, and both struck boundaries at will as they added 234 in just 22 overs. Smith scoring 136no off just 96 balls hitting 16 fours and 5 sixes and Wheelton scoring 102no off just 66 balls hitting 7 fours and 7 sixes, as Langley declared on 262-2 off just 34 overs.

After a superb Wheelton family tea the Langley opening attack reduced Woodford to 33-5. Adam Cartwright bowled Walker 5, Neil Pennington superbly ran out danger man Tom Metcalfe 17, Berzins had Bennet 2 caught at gully, Cartwright and bowled Wahab 0 and when Joe Clinch 7 was caught at short leg the visitors were in deep trouble.

Meese and Marsden led the fight back taking the score to 69 before the former drove Betteridge to mid on where Tommy Potts took a good diving catch.

Marsden continued to attack as he laid into Ben Tyler and Pennington hitting several fine drives.

David Frame managed to tie both batsman down before his calf gave way.

Skipper Berzins then turned back to the opening bowlers.

The score reached 142 when Cartwright bowled Jack Metcalfe 23 and then had Marsden 97 caught by Howdle at square leg, Marsden faced only 65 balls hitting 13 fours and 4 sixes.

Berzins trapped Milson 1 LBW and next ball bowled Danny Clinch as Woodford were all out for 182.

For Langley Cartwright claimed 5-42 off 11 overs, Berzins 3-20 off 7.5 overs, Betteridge 1-37 off 5 overs, Frame 0-7 off 5 overs, Pennington 0-33 and Tyler 0-36 off 4 overs.

Langley travel to Maritime next Saturday.

Langley’s 2nd XI lost away at Styal.

Langley could muster only 90, Alonso Samuel 29 and Matt Barber 25 both batted well.

Styal reached their target with 8 wickets down, Kenny Love 3-17 and Davy Letven 2-15 pick of the attack.
