Macc come through test of their character

-

MACCLESFIELD Town goalkeeper Owen Evans praised the character of his side as they scored a late equaliser to pick up a 2-2 draw at Stevenage.

The Silkmen initially led through a Ben Stephens opener and, considering the fact Stevenage had not scored a goal in their previous five League Two games, looked well set for another three points.

But after Stevenage went 2-1 up, Joe Ironside was on hand to score a penalty in the final minutes to ensure they took a share of the spoils.

While Evans felt that his team could have had even more from the game, he was pleased with the never say die attitude that was displayed as they picked up a point.

“You could look at it as two points dropped after being 1-0 up and looking for the win, but come the end of the season I’m sure we’d all be happy with a 2-2 draw and a point away to Stevenage,” he said.

“I always try to do my best for the team and I was pleased to make some good saves. At the other end it was a good goal from Ben Stephens for us and he’s always good in those 1 v 1 situations, so I’d back him all the way.

“Their tails went up after the first goal went in, and the pressure came again and it was a great strike from their lad. Sometimes you just have to applaud those when you can do nothing about it.

“They went 2-1 up, but then Joe Ironside has been working on his penalties and it was good to see him put that away. We dug deep and showed good character to make sure it finished 2-2.

“The fans were brilliant too as you could hear them from start to finish. It is a long trip to Stevenage so we’re grateful to them for coming and hopefully they had a safe journey back.”
