Mums go on march for the Christie
A TEAM of mums has raised thousands for the Macclesfield Christie appeal by completing a sponsored walk that was 256 miles between them.
The group of eight, who met 20 years ago when their children began at Beech Hall School, Tytherington, will hand over £6,656 having trekked through the Peak District.
One of them, Nic Hodkinson, of Prestbury Road, Macclesfield, has recently undergone treatment for breast cancer at the Christie.
She wanted to use the walk to help rebuild her strength and seven other mums decided to support her.
They were Sarah Kershaw, Val Horan, Ali Griffies, Sue Thatcher, Sian Harrison, Paula Maynard and Helen Beech.
Nic, who is now cancer free having been diagnosed in February, said: “We are very fortunate to have the Christie in the UK let alone in the North West. It’s amazing that the Christie is investing in centres like Macclesfield.
“The travel for treatment takes a huge toll on the patient and their family. I’m delighted that The Christie’s culture will be replicated at this site.
“I know from personal experience that it is not so much what they do but how they do it that is so amazing.”
Members of the group have also taken on the Great North Run, the Manchester 100 bike ride and the Manchester to Blackpool cycling challenge.
Helen said: “Our friendship began when our children were at primary school more than 20 years ago.
“Throughout those years, as well as through personal experiences, we have seen family members, close friends and colleagues receive world class care and treatment at The Christie.
“When Nic was diagnosed we were inspired to undertake a significant challenge both in solidarity for our friend and also to raise funds for a really important cause.
“Both my mum and dad were treated at the Christie. In my mum’s case, this was when she was only in her 30s - she went on to live to a very healthy 93 years, so I am very grateful.”
