Blues overturn Morpeth’s lead

- NORTH PREMIER

MACCLESFIELD played their first home league match of the season against a very stern Morpeth side on Saturday.

The Blues managed to claim a bonus point victory despite trailing at half time to the visitors.

The game started even in terms of possession but it was Morpeth who opened the scoring with a kick through being dotted down.

Tries then came from Josh Redfern and Peter Milne, resulting in Macclesfield leading after 20 minutes 14-7.

Morpeth might have had a long journey, but they evened proceedings courtesy of a loose carry from the Blues which left an open field to be ran through to go under the sticks.

Morpeth then took the lead going into half time thanks to exploiting the empty wing space, 14- 21 to the visitors at the half.

A response was needed, and it came in the form of keeping the away team scoreless throughout the rest of the game and three Blues tries from Will Davies, Myles Hall and, with 10 minutes to go, James Oliver.

The game ended 33-21 and it meant the full five points went to Macclesfield.

Coach Andy Appleyard seemed in good spirits after the match.

‘‘It’s fantastic for the boys, we didn’t perform to full potential especially the first half, we reviewed it at half time, we looked at areas we could work on,” he said. “The boys came out a different team after half time.”

Next for the squad is an away trip to Ilkley this coming Saturday. More of the same is needed if promotion is to be achieved.
