Be a bright spark and attend event

- ALEX SCAPENS

FIREWORK fans have been urged to have an enjoyable but safe Bonfire Night.

Organised events will take place across Macclesfield this week – and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have urged people to attend these rather than have their own.

And the service also has a hotline number for residents to report any dangerous looking bonfires before they are lit.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “It’s much safer to attend an organised community bonfire – so please attend an organised event this Bonfire Night.

“Most injuries throughout the bonfire period occur as a result of people building their own bonfires, and setting off their own fireworks.

“Don’t cut corners just to save a few pounds.

“Always buy fireworks from a reputable shop to make sure that they conform to British Standards.

“This means that they should have BS 7114 written on the box. Don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, such as the back of a van or from a temporary, unlicensed market stall.”
