Prestbury Ladies claim victory in County Plate

STOCKPORT Golf Club provided an excellent course and fine off-course hospitalit­y for the finals of the Cheshire Ladies Leagues featuring the champion teams of the East and West leagues in competitio­n for the county champion trophies.

The A team match saw Prestbury take on Wallasey, who were on fine form winning four of the five matches with only Nicky Markland winning for Prestbury as Wallasey chalked up wins from Julia Gibson, Barbara Eyres, Margaret Walker and Liz Fairweathe­r.

Then it was into B team action between Tytheringt­on and Sandiway and again early wins for Susan Bury, Celia Stanley, Ewa Sidorczuk and Jean McKillop saw Tytheringt­on in charge with Carol Dodd providing the Sandiway consolatio­n as the other two games were conceded.

The final match was for the County Plate between Prestbury and Royal Liverpool and Prestbury stormed into a 3-0 lead with wins for Jane Campaigne, Mary Staton and Margaret Simons.

Victory was soon confirmed with a win for Darlene Masters with the remaining three games conceded leaving Prestbury as 4-3 winners with some impressive golf.

East Cheshire Chair Margaret Jamieson and Cheshire Lady Captain Jeanne Bell handed out the trophies to the winning teams who gave deserved praise to Stockport Golf Club and the organisers of the competitio­n.

Back at Prestbury their ladies played a Dubai Stableford and the top team with 90 points were G Dawson, Y Hall, A Wood and N Brough.

It left them one clear of G Singh, J Purves, Jill Gregory and G Clewley who won a cpo from Nicky Markland, C Shuttlewor­th, S Beesley and M Wood.

A midweek Stableford for Prestbury’s men was won by Mike Forbes with 37 points taking him home from Graham Roche 36 and Alastair Kennedy and Geoffrey Bickerton, both 35.

There were two ‘major’ trophies played for at Avro and the H Wood Trophy was won by Michael Thornber with 67, two less than Tony Mullins and Peter Walker.

Tony Mullin stepped up a place in the Stableford for the Greenkeepe­r’s Trophy posting 34 points to lead in from Don Millington 32 and John Wetherell 31. It was Moore and Moore in a Thursday Stableford at Alderley Edge with Sam Moore on top with 18 points, three more than Stephen Moore.

Edge’s ladies played a medal as a Bunty Booth qualifier and Celia Berent will represent the club in the 2020 Bunty Booth as she posted 81 to finish ahead of Julie Ricketts 82 and Tracy Smith 83.

A Two from Three Stableford for Davenport’s men was led in with 90 points by the hot trio of P Crosby, N Parker and S Lancashire, five clear of P Edmondson, F Howard and A Fletcher. Mottram Hall’s men played their Champion of Champions medal and Daniel Edwards was the proud winner with 71 from Matt Delargy 72 and Shok

Mirza, Isabella TaylorStok­es, Andy Stubbens, Nigel Woods and Sean Smith, all 74.

The Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Peter Trussell with 40 points from Neil Worthingto­n 38 and Rod Scott 37.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played for the 2000 Cup and it was won by Alycia Sutton from Chris Hickmott and Jill Hunter Blench Wendy Higgins had the best gross and the 37-54 handicap winner was Val Fox with Judy Mutter winning the nearest the pin prize and scoring the only Two.

The Wednesday Stableford at Styal had Mark Mynes in top spot with 35 points from Tom Bloor 34 and Ivan Bloor 33.

Styal seniors kicked off their Winter League with a singles Stableford and Ted Marsden led in with 36 points from David Barlow 35 and Peter Robins and David Bate, both 33.

Sale Golf Club recovered well from the recent heavy downpours and provided a great course for their annual staging of the historic Hancock Trophy for mixed pairs.

It went to the wire of a cpo on 40 points to decide the winners of the trophy between home pair Mobi and Cath Rawthore and Alderley Edge profession­al Charles le Sueur and Jo McGregor.

The powerful Sale pair comprising Mobi, a top senior with Cheshire and his wife England Senior Lady star Cath got the verdict to put their name on the trophy again.

It was presented to them by Alliance President Ian Brooks who thanked Sale for their great support after being welcomed by Captain Terry Crewe and Lady Captain Jenny Page.

The winners topped the am am section by a point from Michael Smith and Sophie Garretty (Blackley) who won a cpo from Ashton-under-Lyne duo John and Jacqui Dawber.

There was another double for Alliance Order of Merit leader Phil Archer as he was top individual pro with 40 points ahead of Tim Maxwell (Knutsford) 37 and Gary Brown (Glossop) and Martyn Hamer (Davyhulme Park), both 35.

Phil (Poulton Park) partnered his mum Jean (Birchwood) to top spot in the pro am section with a fine haul of 44 points from Gary Brown and his Mellor and Townscliff­e partner Kim Jackson 42 and Charles le Sueur and Jo McGregor 40.

The Stella Watson Trophy is one of the top competitio­ns for Cheshire Girls and after the original competitio­n had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions it was rearranged at Bramhall Golf Club.

One more the weather was showery and in holding conditions it proved to be a tight competitio­n with only four points separating the top seven players.

The winner was Claire Alice Williams from Vicars Cross GC with 34 points taking her clear of Georgia Allen (High Legh Park) GC 33 and Imogen Marsland (Lymm) 32.

For the younger players the 9-hole competitio­n was won by Jasmine Eve Glen (Prestbury), from Esme Graham (Vicars Cross) and Morgan Bollan, (Crewe) with some excellent golf from these budding young golfers.
