beat three defenders with quick footwork to go over the line in the corner.
The conversion did not go over which left the score 17-19.
In the last two minutes of the game, Wirral’s James Annetts missed two penalty kicks from the halfway line which sealed their fate.
After the match, Coach Andy Appleyard said: “We all know what we’re here to do, we all know how we want to play and we all believe in it.
“We need to do it from kick off, if we start well then it pins us up to finish well.”
Up next, is top of the table Billingham.
If Macclesfield can play to their potential, there is no reason why they cannot hand the runaway leaders their first loss of the season.
One thing is for certain, it will be an entertaining encounter at Priory Park this coming Saturday that cannot be missed.
Meanwhile, Macclesfield Ladies enjoyed a 45-22 victory against Moore Ladies.
Macclesfield were bolstered by the return of some key players from injury and were delighted to win their second development fixture of the season.
The ladies now play in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Development Merit Table. This means that they have an opportunity to play regular fixtures throughout the season.
They’ve been working hard in training under Coach Simon Dempsey, assisted by his son Max and friend Louis Grey, both students at Preston College.
Our ladies were tested defensively but excellent tackling by Hayley Marshall and Amanda Rosser held the team from Moore at bay, then an interception by Amy Redfern, who ran from her own 22, to dot down between the posts for the opening try after 8 minutes.
Macc then went from strength- to- strength, plenty more line-breaks and further interceptions led to tries by Beth Rimmer-Kent, Rosser and Kirsty Wallis.
All in all every player made a huge contribution; it was an enormous confidence booster. They’ve improved hugely between every match. Captain Mary Thorpe and Dempsey were delighted with their improved skill sets.
The Ladies train every Tuesday evening at Priory Park, any new players interested please contact Mary on marythorpe94@ gmail.com
