Police launch an inquiry into scrapyard fire
AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a large fire at a scrapyard was deliberately started.
Emergency services were called to Henshaw’s Scrap Cars and Scrap Metal, on Turf Lane, Macclesfield, on Thursday, November 21, at around 6.45pm.
The blaze involved an area measuring 10m by 6m and involved car tyres and other scrap items.
Residents from properties near the sight called 999 after seeing thick, black smoke coming from the site and large flames. Reece Grainger, 19, who lives nearby, said: “It was a big fire, it took three fire engines. About 7pm I looked out of my window and saw a lot of black smoke.
” You could see the flames. It was worrying as if it had spread there’s a lot of oil and fuel around as it is quite industrial here. It could have been awful. They (the fire service) left about midnight.”
Crews from Macclesfield fire station were called to the scene.
They used two hose reels to extinguish the blaze before using a thermal imaging camera to check it was fully out.
There were no reports of any injuries.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police confirmed the incident was being treated as arson and appealed for witnesses.
A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire was large, measuring 6m x 10m, and involved car tyres and other scrap items, producing a lot of black smoke.
”Crews used two hose reels to tackle the blaze and utilised a thermal imaging camera to focus on areas that needed particular attention.
“They remained at the scene for four hours in total, damping down and checking for hotspots.
“A fire investigation is under way, as this is thought to have been a deliberate ignition.” Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
