Team wages war to pull in golden prize
TEAM members showed their pulling power as a tug of war squad won two championship medals.
Bosley Tug of War Club triumphed in the AAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, striking gold in the 640kg (total weight) class.
And they also won silver in the catchweight category - where there is no weight limit.
It is the first time the club, based on Tunstall Road, has taken part in the indoor championship circuit for around a decade and they will now go for the national title.
Indoor tug of war is different to the more well-known outdoor version of the sport with bouts taking place on special matting.
Alan Knott, from the club, said: “This was a great result for our club.
“We have recruited a number of new members this year, so decided to take part on the indoor circuit to get our newer members ready for the 2020 outdoor tug of war season.
“We didn’t really know what to expect going into this year’s indoor tug of war season, so to come away with a gold and a silver at the AAA championships is a remarkable achievement.”
The squad currently has 18 pullers and they beat Lancashire side Kilroe in the 640kg class but lost to defending champions Uppertown, from Derbyshire, in the catchweight.
The club has an illustrious history, winning gold in both categories at the first AAA Indoor Championships in 1978.
It has also won 11 European Championship golds and one at the World Championships in 1976.
Alan said: “We will be taking part in the Tug of War Association national indoor tug of war championships, which will be another step up in competition and we look forward to seeing what we can achieve there. We are always looking for new members to join our club - as the sport is held in weight categories, the more members we have, the more competitions we can enter.”
