James makes mark on debut

- BOXING

TWAS another busy weekend for MBBC, with the club having boxers competing on two events over the course of 24 hours.

It began on Friday when they headed to Bolton for a fight on the Halliwell ABC show.

Senior boxer James Rowlinson was making his debut for the club as he went up against Allisandra Staffa in front of a sell out crowd.

In round one Rowlinson was was a bit tentative at first but once he got into it and the nerves disappeared he started to work off his jab against Staffa, who looked ripped and a lot bigger.

Rowlinson’s work rate was at a good pace and he was in and out catching with some quality shots. In round two Staffa realised he was going to have to up his game and he came out fighting with the bout going one way then the other.

Both lads wanted the win and weren’t giving an inch but Staffa edged the second, so it went into the last round and with nothing to lose the instruction was keep the work rate up to the final bell, and to keep throwing and hope for the best, which is exactly what Rowlinson did as both lads gave it their all right up to the final call.

It was a great, well matched contest between two game kids that the crowd appreciated, and the winner James Rowlinson on a split decision against the home fighter.

Both coaches would not have questioned the decision if it had gone the other way, with both boxers putting in a great performance.

Macc were then back in Bolton on Saturday for another event, as young George Oliver went up against Hakeem Khan on a Premier Boxing Club event.

It was a great show with a lively crowd, and as they entered the ring it was clear Khan had a lot of support. Oliver was unfazed though and ready for business having worked hard in the gym.

He was set on boxing well with phased attacks showing great composure as he outboxed Khan moving well on his feet and throwing nice shots.

Khan was trying his best to keep the pace but Oliver was on fire looking like a seasoned boxer.

He was very classy and accurate with his shots, and the crowd was quiet as they saw their fighter being schooled.

As the final bell rang for round three the crowd had just witnessed quality boxing from an 11-yearold with a great future, and Oliver was given a well deserved win.
