Young invited to quiz candidates

- PATRICK JACK

YOUNG people are encouraged to take part in a special General Election event aimed at the under-30s.

Held at Tytherington School, on Manchester Road, on Saturday, December 7, from 4pm, it will be the first of two hustings in the space of three days.

The other, which is open to everyone, will take place at St Michael’s Church, Macclesfield Market Place, on Monday, December 9, from 7.15pm.

All four candidates have been invited - James Booth (Green Party), Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats), Neil Puttick (Labour) and David Rutley (Conservative) to the first hustings.

Botwe, at Tytherington School, said: “From our point of view, we are one of the town’s two hustings. It’s going to give young people an opportunity to ask about matters that are particularly relevant to them.

“Climate change is a big use for young people, also local matters in terms of town regeneration and things for young people to do

“Support for young families and young parents is also going to be a big issue as well as other sorts of issues all over the country.

“Stepping on to the housing market - they will want to hear the views of the candidates on these things as well as the big matter of Brexit which everybody is talking about.”

The event will be largely focused on those under 30, along with first-time voters, but all are welcome to come along.

Audience members can submit questions for the four candidates to answer but should be topics that all speakers can answer on.

Mr Botwe added: “The last few days before the election are where a lot of undecided people make up their minds.

“Also it will be one of the last opportunities to see the candidates and ask them what their plans are and how they want to improve Macclesfield.”

Tickets for the event will be free and there’s no need to book.

However, to guarantee a place at the St Michael’s event and to have a chance to submit a question in advance, register via www.eventbrite.co.uk for ‘Macc Hustings 2019’.
