Fire crews battle with huge blaze

- ALEX SCAPENS

ATOTAL of 12 fire crews were sent to battle a large blaze at an industrial building.

The fire, at Polytech International Ltd, on Long Lane, Pott Shrigley, started shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, December 4, and involved machinery at the site.

It took hold of an area measuring 30m by 10m and gave off a significant amount of black smoke caused by burning rubber.

But according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service it could have been much worse if not for safety precautions at the firm.

A spokesman said: “The area involved in fire was protected by sprinklers, these activated and did a tremendous job of containing the fire and preventing spread to adjoining buildings. The fire was contained to the building, which firefighters ventilated.”

An investigation into the cause of the blaze has now been launched.

Crews were at the scene until 9.30am the following day before they were satisfied the building was safe.

Over the course of the 17 hours 12 fire engines attended the site including those from Macclesfield, Bollington, Wilmslow and Poynton.

And others were sent from as far afield as Stockton Heath, Crewe, Alsager, Sandbach and Offerton, in Stockport.

A water shuttle was set up to get enough water to the area and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control.

Crews also used a covering jet and a main jet. There were no reports of injuries.

The company supplies polyurethane and EPDM granules, often used in surfaces for play and leisure facilities.

The Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: “Once the fire looked to be out the building was inspected and firefighters worked through the night exposing hotspots and damping them down to make them safe.” It is unclear as yet what the investigation found to be the cause of the fire.
