Brewers’ plan to open a new bar packs real punch

- PATRICK JACK

THE expanding Bollington Brewing franchise have submitted plans for a new Macclesfield pub, which would have a boxing club in its basement.

Applicant Lee Wainwright has applied for a full planning application for a change in use of 32 Park Green from a retail unit to a cafe/ bar.

Currently a vacant store, the new pub would be Bollington Brewing’s fourth establishment, just a five minute walk away from one of the company’s others, on Park Lane.

It has already received support from local residents, with two letters of support from members of the public - including one from someone who lives across the road.

One said the owner “runs some fine establishments in Macclesfield, Bollington and Poynton and all support real ale/food and responsible drinking in their bars.

“A great addition to the town and aiding Macclesfield become a destination town to visit alongside our fine traditional pubs, cafes, shops, and markets.”

Another claimed it would be a “perfect use” of the building, looks to maintain the building’s heritage and that their other sites are “great assets to the community”.

Planning documents show the proposed basement incorporating a boxing club and a meeting room, along with the bar cellar.

The total size of the proposal would be 381.2 sq. metres.

It would involve the hiring of 10 full-time and 15 part-time staff, though the opening hours are not yet known.

The company started in 2005 with the purchase of the Vale Inn, in Bollington, to create a community pub selling local micro brewery beer and food.

Their second pub, Macclesfield’s Park Tavern, was opened in 2011 and has won a number of awards from CAMRA – the Campaign for Real Ale. It is also home to a boutique cinema, ‘Pictures in the Park’, which hosts regular screenings.

In 2013, the company opened their third pub, the Cask Tavern in Poynton. They also host the annual Bollington 3 Peaks Fell Race, the only one of its kind in Britain to start and finish at a brewery.

A decision is expected by January 17, 2020.
