Bosley pull off golden double

- ALEX SCAPENS

STRONG men gave the opposition the heave-ho to be named double national tug of war champions.

Members of Bosley Tug of War Club triumphed at the AAA National Indoor Championships, held in Birmingham.

They are competing on the indoor circuit for the first time in 10 years and have a squad of 18 pullers.

The club competed in five of the six available categories, 560kg, 600kg, 640kg, 680kg and catchweight - where there is no weight limit.

And gold was struck in the 560kg and 600kg sections, with Kilroe, from Lancashire, the defeated finalists on both occasions, as well as a bronze at 680kg.

Alan Knott, from the club, said: “These were great results for our club.

“We decided to take part on the indoor circuit to get our newer members ready for the 2020 outdoor tug of war season.

“We certainly didn’t expect to come away with a national indoor championships gold medal.

“So to come away with two gold medals as well as the additional bonus of a bronze medal is a remarkable achievement.”

Bosley last won a national indoor title in 1981 but it has a proud history, including golds at European and world level.

Members will now represent England at the British and Irish Championships, which take place in Malvern, in February.

Alan added: “We will be up against other national teams from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland which will be a big step up for us.

”But it will be a great challenge against some of the other best indoor tug of war nations in the world at the present time.”

Bosley Tug of War Club, based on Tunstall Road, is looking for new members, anyone interested can call Alan on 07976 591222.
