Homes on disused site are given the go-ahead

-

A DISUSED site in Macclesfield town centre will be redeveloped after permission was given to build 14 new homes.

Cheshire East Council gave the thumbs up to a joint planning application from builder Silkdale Living and Arighi Bianchi for land off Canal Street.

Currently it has two dilapidated and empty industrial buildings on it, that will be demolished, and the remainder is an out of use car park.

But the boss of nearby flooring business Maintenance Contractors objected to plans and warned that any residents would have to get used to round the clock noise from the firm.

The objection stated: “Our operation is noisy and operates during unsociable hours.

“The yard immediately adjoins the proposed development. We work all over the UK so our vans are arriving and leaving late at night and early in the morning.

“If this proposed development goes ahead it must be made very clear our business will continue operating exactly as it is now.”

Planning officers raised no concerns sufficient to refuse the application though.

The proposals consist of 10 three-bed houses and four two-bed apartments.

As part of planning permission the applicants will give £32,685 towards school provision and £42,000 for play and open space creation.

A report by BAND Architects, submitted with the application, said: “As a medium scale new build development, the Canal Street development will aspire to achieve good standards of sustainable development in the use of energy, water and materials.

“The building design and operation will also aspire to achieve high standards in all areas of sustainability.” Macclesfield Civic Society are supportive of the development and a spokesman said: “The redevelopment of the site for residential purposes is to be welcomed.

”The design and elevational treatment is contemporary but respective of local building traditions.”

The society did point out that only one parking space for each of the four apartments (there is two for each house) may be insufficient.

But the council says the site’s proximity to public transport means it has enough parking.
