MBBC youngsters end the year in fine style

- BOXING

MBBC’S busy end to the year continued as they were involved in several events over the last few weeks.

It began at the start of

December when they competed on a Team Greaves ABC show in Hollinwood. Young Dylan Stephenson was out again and his opponent was Ryan Simmons from the home club.

Both had similar records and were bang on weight so in round one Ryan was switch hitting which was flustering Dylan as he had no experience sparring southpaws.

It was clear that Ryan was a natural southpaw and he was catching Dylan quite a bit in the first, but the second was different and after some advice from the corner Dylan was coping a bit better but still not getting to grip with the southpaw stance.

Ryan was a good boxer and was using the ring well, but Dylan was doing his best and having more success in this round than the first.

In round three the coaches had told Dylan he had nothing to lose so turn it up and go for it, which he did and this was by far his best round as he pushed on to Ryan, not letting him set his feet and throwing three and four punch combinations, smothering him with shots.

This was Dylan’s round but as is always the case it was too little to late, especially against a home fighter, so Ryan took the win on a unanimous decision.

A week later MBBC then headed to Newcastleunder-Lyme to take part on a show put together by Silverdale ABC.

Young Oakley Roberts was making his debut against Adam Hussain from Orme in a skills contest. The nerves were kicking in for Oakley but with reassurances that once the bell rang everything would be OK, he touched gloves and away they went.

It was just jabbing in round one and Adam was taller and had longer arms so he was throwing well, but Oakley had a high guard and was slowly getting the measure of his opponent.

In round two they could throw straight lefts and rights, and both kids were having success in this round and giving a good display.

In round three they were let loose and both Oakley and Adam were capable and looked confident with throwing combinations and moving around the ring.

It was a great opening bout and by the end the nerves had gone and both were elated and had enjoyed themselves.

MBBC rounded off the busy period when they were involved in a prestigious dinner show put on by Clayton ABC on behalf of the Lyons Charities, with it taking place at the Dunkenhaigh Hotel in Blackburn.

Young Archie Dale was in his fourth skills bout, and his opponent was Declan Downing from a new club run by Steve Maylett, the trainer of former world champion Terry Flanagan.

Declan was throwing some nice shots but Archie stayed relaxed and threw his shots with ease and looked comfortable. Declan was taller, heavier and quite a bit older and this showed in his power but Archie used a good guard to stay behind his gloves then let them go, catching Declan with some clean shots.

Declan was strong and caught Archie with some good shots of his own in a fantastic bout, with neither boxer winning or losing but learning a great deal.

MBBC will host an event of their own at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on February 7, with tickets costing £10. Doors open at 7:30pm, with boxing commencing at 8pm.
