Whit’s the one for Silkmen supporters

- ALEX SCAPENS

FANS of managerless Macclesfield Town are in little doubt who they want to take over as boss - club legend Danny Whitaker.

The Silkmen lost their second manager this season when Daryl McMahon - as well as his assistant Steve Gritt - resigned on Thursday, January 2.

The club says it is now taking legal advice but supporters have reacted with sympathy and understanding to McMahon’s decision.

And as the Moss Rose faithful try and look forward they are firm in the view that Whitaker is the man to galvanise the squad and attempt to provide stability.

Ryan Cawley, a member of the Silkmen Supporters Trust, said: “Most Macc fans would be happy with Danny Whitaker in charge.

“He is the obvious choice. Previously when he was caretaker he won both his games and we won on Saturday.

“Daryl McMahon did a good job in difficult circumstances, seemed an approachable person and fans appreciated the work he did.”

Under Whitaker’s currently temporary charge the Silkmen beat Cambridge on Saturday.

Meanwhile, McMahon - who replaced Sol Campbell early in the season - has been appointed manager at National League side Dagenham and Redbridge.

The Moss Rose faithful are aware that after a chaotic 2019 it may be difficult to attract a new manager from outside the club.

But there is a popular belief Whitaker, who has made more than 300 appearances for the club, is the man for the job regardless.

Andy Worth, chairman of the Silk Supporters

Trust, said: “Danny Whitaker is arguably one of the most popular players in recent times.

“He has been a great servant to the club and is very professional and approachable.

“He brings stability, lives locally, and in the midst of all the upheavals gives fans something to cling to.

“Daryl showed incredible professionalism and integrity alongside his assistant Steve Gritt. He was very popular and we wish him nothing but the best.”

Macclesfield Town has made no comment on who will be the next fulltime manager.

A statement released on Thursday, January 2, said: “Macclesfield Town can regretfully confirm that head coach Daryl McMahon and assistant head coach Steve Gritt have both tendered their resignations.

“We are taking advice from our legal team in relation to this and will provide a further update as soon as possible.”
