Straw’s win makes trip to Rainworth worthwhile

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club had three bouts on a Friday evening at Rainworth and Blidworth ABC recently.

Leaving the gym at 5pm for the two-hour journey, the youngsters were all weighed in and on early.

First up was Olly Hand in another skills contest against Kyle Ladilow from Starbox ABC.

Both kids were game and worked well throughout the contest with Olly catching with clean shots, picking it up in each round and throwing more shots.

Kyle held his own but had this been a contest Olly would have come out on top, indicating that it’s time to step up for the youngster.

Next up in her second contest was Sienna Bircham, against another local club Huthwate ABC.

Her opponent was Emily Dennel in another skills bout and Sienna looked so much more confident as she went to work with her jab, catching her opponent clean.

Again in the second she improved with the straight one two down the middle. The third round saw Emily do a bit better as the kids were allowed to throw any shot – but Sienna was cutting the ring down and throwing a good selection of shots. Again, another great learning bout for both kids.

Last up was Joe Straw from MBBC against a lad from Bennys ABC, Spencer Binks.

He was slightly heavier than Joe and he looked to be more muscular in physique. The bell rang and both kids looked confident and went straight to work.

Binks was a come forward fighter with Straw being more comfortable at boxing, a plus for the Macc lad.

Binks continually came forward with his head and shoulder, constantly holding and trying to smother Straw’s work.

The coaches in the corner got told off by the referee for pointing out Binks’ foul play but he seemed to do nothing about it, eventually he had a go at the cornermen rather than the boxer.

But it didn’t matter as Straw had the measure of his opponent, smashing him with quality shots at ease.

Round two and Straw picked up his game, landing more frequently, pushing Binks back and Binks’ only answer was to try and spoil a bit more.

Straw caught Binks with beautiful lead hand hook which would have been a standing eight count on any other show – but not with this referee.

Round three was by far Straw’s best, catching at will and giving a great display of what boxing should look like.

Again he caught his opponent with another big shot and the ref looked the other way Binks was getting tired now and holding even more and towards the end of the round he literally grabbed Straw and pushed him in to the corner and held him while again the ref did nothing.

But when the bell rang, thankfully the judges knew what they had just seen and Straw was awarded the unanimous win having taken on a good strong kid and at times the referee, the crowd was fair and acknowledged a fantastic display, making the two hour journey home more enjoyable.
