Police snare 12 speeders in day ‘whizzing past’ on danger road
POLICE caught 12 drivers speeding in one afternoon on a stretch of road where residents complain about cars ‘whizzing past’.
Officers were at Chelford Road, Macclesfield, where there have been long-standing safety complaints and worries there could be a serious accident.
The road, which goes through Broken Cross and Henbury, increases to a 40mph limit past the Cock pub.
But it is 30mph on the Macclesfield side of this and that is where PCSO Barlow, armed with a speed gun, captured a dozen motorists going too fast.
Councillors for the Broken Cross and Upton ward, James Barber and Rob Vernon have issued a joint statement on the matter.
They said: “We are deeply frustrated by the amount of speeding vehicles along what is one of the main access roads into and out of Macclesfield.
“We are grateful to PCSO Barlow for taking the time to monitor the speeding issues and look forward to working with him to find solutions.
“We have asked the council numerous times to install new speed indicators, including ‘repeaters’ and clearer road markings, however our suggestions have been consistently knocked back.
“We hope to find a solution that works for the council, the police, and most importantly, the community, before we see a terrible accident occur.”
PCSO Barlow was out with the speed gun on Sunday, January 5, and immediately put the results on Facebook.
He returned to Chelford Road on Saturday, January 11, when no vehicles were caught speeding.
One resident on the road, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s a real problem, cars whizz past so fast you can barely see them.
“There ought to be more signs stating the 30mph limit.
“When a car stops to let us out of our driveway other cars behind overtake even though there are clear lines which tell people not to overtake on that part of the road.”
Cheshire East Council has been asked for comment.
