Property packed full of history
ASKING PRICE: £3.95m
DATING back to the 12th century, Domesday Manor Canonteign is one of Devon’s most important ancient homes.
Set at the top of a 10-acre plot overlooking the Teign Valley, the Grade I listed detached property has a long and varied history, given first to the canons of St Mary du Val in Normandy in 1125.
It later passed to the Prior and convent of Merton in Surrey, then after the Reformation was granted to
Lord John Russell.
Garrisoned for the king during the English Civil War, it was taken by Thomas Fairfax in 1645.
The manor became a family home in the 17th century, and in 1812 was bought by Sir Edward Pellew – later Lord Viscount Exmouth. It was restored by Lady Exmouth in the 1970s and has recently been brought into the 21st century with a renovation which combines history and modern technology.
With 10 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and nine living rooms

– including a dining room seating at least 20 guests – plus a staff apartment on the second floor, Canonteign is enormous but somehow manages to still feel homely.
Original features include granite fireplaces, stone flooring, intricate wood panelling and beautiful stone mullion windows.
The house stands in landscaped grounds with large areas of lawn, leading down to a bluebell wood, and a heated outdoor swimming pool.
