Flats for vulnerable are planned at former pub
AFORMER pub will be turned into supported living apartments for vulnerable adults if proposals are approved.
Formerly the Weston Public House, on Earlsway, Macclesfield, it has been earmarked for 10 flats by applicant Earlsway Ltd.
A planning application has been submitted to Cheshire East Council that would involve refurbishing and extending the currently disused building.
The plans are similar to those on Ivy Lane for eight supported living apartments that have attracted nearly 40 objections.
There would be communal lounge, garden and kitchen areas with the one-bed apartments as well as care staff on site round the clock, nine parking spaces and storage for eight bikes.
Plans are currently out to consultation with a decision expected in March.
Councillor Nick Mannion, who represents Macclesfield West and Ivy, has his concerns about the proposals.
He said: “I already intend to raise a number of questions, especially about parking and the number of flat/apartments.”
The development would provide accommodation for vulnerable adults aged 18 to 65.
Should permission be given the building would be leased to Blue Square Residential, a not for profit provider of social housing for people with physical or learning disabilities or mental health needs.
The company would work with Independence Support, who would provide the care.
A report by Satplan, agents for the development, says Cheshire East Council has confirmed there is a need for accommodation for vulnerable adults in the borough.
It also says nine parking spaces would be sufficient as ‘none of the residents will hold a driving licence given their disabilities’.
The report further states: “The proposals make use of an otherwise vacant public house. In designing the scheme care has been taken to ensure that the proposals both meet the needs of future residents, in respect of both design and access, whilst also protecting the amenity of existing residents.
“This proposal represents sustainable development, in social, environmental and economic respects.”
The applicant at Ivy Lane is called Ivy Lane Ltd and Blue Square Residential and Independence Support would have the same roles as at the proposed Earlsway development.
