New arrivals to boost progression

-

MACCLESFIELD Town head coach Mark Kennedy feels the club needs to bring in new players following their 2-1 defeat at Colchester United on Saturday.

Callum Harriott’s strike along with a Fiacre Kelleher own goal condemned the Silkmen to defeat, despite a consolation late on from Ben Stephens.

Kennedy felt his side gave it their all in a scrappy match, but feels the time is right to now bring in new additions to the club.

“It was a really scrappy game, an ugly game and there was a lot of technical breakdowns, but I thought it was very competitive and I wish it had been a prettier game of football,” he said.

“I thought we were a little bit naive in the first half in terms of they hurt us down the sides and it was clever play from them and the wingers.

“We’ve worked really hard in the past couple of days on a specific pattern of play and we got in great positions without giving away our secrets. There were many occasions where we’ve done the hard bit, but we’ve struggled at releasing the ball and getting into certain positions.

“In terms of the attitude and endeavour from the lads it was incredible. We were unlucky going 2-0 down when we conceded the worldie from Colchester and the own goal from Kelleher. But I never thought we’d concede four or five, I always felt we had something in this game.

“I said to the lads after the game that because you’ve got a new coach and a different way of playing you might have to take a step backwards to go two or three steps forward. But in five or six weeks we’re going to be a lot further ahead with further additions and new players coming in.

“With the fixtures coming up I think it will help the lads out by bringing in some players into the weaker areas in the team.

“If you look at our stats we have conceded a lot of goals in the last fifteen minutes this season. I said last night that if we’re really in the game then we should let loose in the last moments and really go for the three points.”

“Some parts of the game were really good but what I was disappointed with was how we played on the ball. I didn’t think we played great, but I also think Colchester didn’t either.”

It was set to be a busy week for Macclesfield, as they were then due to welcome Crewe

Alexandra to the Moss Rose as the Express went to print on Tuesday. The Silkmen were in 22nd position ahead of the match, with promotion hopefuls were in third place.
