Civic Society starts the search for this year’s best building

- ALEX SCAPENS

IT’S time to decide what was the best building put up in Macclesfield over the last 12 months.

Macclesfield Civic Society Awards Scheme is open for nominations for the top building, improvement or development completed in the town in 2019.

In deciding a winner judges will look for good design, architectural features and preservation or enhancement of the character of the town.

There is also an award for the event, activity or exhibition that has made a positive contribution to the vitality of Macclesfield. And of course the title no one wants to win - the 2019 ‘grot spot’ for a site or building that desperately needs attention.

Keith Smith, chairman of the civic society, said: “Forget the Oscars, Baftas or Strictly, it’s time to submit your nominations for the Macclesfield Civic Awards Scheme.

“The winners won’t get a New Year’s Honour, celebrity status or even a Facebook page but there will be lots of recognition for a job well done. And, if especially good, a neat ceramic plaque to hang on the wall – so plenty to play for.”

Nominations must fall within the area covered by Macclesfield Town Council, which is supporting the awards, and deadline is Saturday, February 29.

There are two categories of prizes, a commendation where the successful entrant will receive a certificate and an award where a plaque will also be presented.

Last year’s winners were Silkdale Living’s Loney Street development and Kenyon’s Yard, Great King Street, from South

Park Developments.

Keith added: “Nominations can be made by individuals, societies, organisations or companies, including developers who can nominate their own schemes.

“There is no limit to the number of nominations that can be made – the more the better.” Winners will be announced by the Mayor of Macclesfield Janet Jackson at the society’s meeting on Wednesday, April 15, at the Heritage Centre, Roe Street.

Send nominations to the acting secretary, Macclesfield Civic Society, c/o 57 Orme Crescent, Tytherington, Macclesfield, SK10 2HU, or email keith76079smith@yahoo. com.

Information required is the building name and number, location of the site and details of the developer or architect if known.
