It’s time to get in saddle as bikeathon makes return

- ALEX SCAPENS

CYCLISTS are getting geared up for the Macclesfield Bikeathon as entries for the mass ride are now open.

The event takes place this year on Saturday, May 16, starting from outside the town hall on the Market Place, where there will also be stalls and family activities.

There are three courses for entrants to choose from, the toughest being the 64-mile route along country lanes towards Tatton Park and to Byley.

A little easier is the 33-mile option around the Cheshire Plain that heads towards Jodrell Bank and takes in Great Warford Baptist Church.

Lastly, there is a 12-mile family ride via the Middlewood Way.

All routes will begin and end at the Market Place.

The Bikeathon was a regular fixture for 20 years but fell off the calendar. It then returned last year with almost 200 people getting in the saddle.

Helena Gowler, from event funders Macclesfield Town Council, said: “Last year, the town council supported the return of the Bikeathon and it was great to see so many people taking part.

“We are delighted to be involved with the event again. This year there is the added bonus of a community event in the town centre which we are really looking forward to.

“Making physical activity the fun and easy option is important to the town council and the Bikeathon is a perfect fit with this.”

The event will also raise money for charity Just Drop-In, which supports young people in Macclesfield.

Organiser Darren Allgood, from Allgood Cycling, said: “Organising the Bikeathon is such a rewarding experience.

“We get to work with brilliant local people generating community spirit and promoting health and fitness while raising money.”

Ann Wright, from Just Drop-In, said: “This is a fabulous community event which we are terrifically proud to be involved in.

“With the growing demand for emotional and mental health support, all the funds raised will go towards providing free counselling support to local young people.”
