MBBC get 2020 off to fine start

- BOXING

IT’S been a busy start to the year for MBBC as they were involved in several competitions to kick off 2020.

Things got underway for them in Coventry, as they competed on a show put together by Newdigate ABC.

Oakley Roberts was in action, competing in a skills contest against Newdigate boxer Parghat Singh.

This was great little contest with no restrictions, so the kids were allowed to go for it from the start, with the referee keeping an eye on the power.

Both kids gave their all, showing great boxing skills in an evenly matched fight.

They were throwing shot after shot for the whole three rounds in a great contest with no losers but plenty of applause from those watching.

Next up was another skills bout, with Sienna Bircham facing Mya Morris, who was also a Newdigate boxer.

Mya stood a bit taller than Seinna, although there wasn’t much between them when they started boxing.

Again this was a more like an official bout as they were allowed to throw what they wanted from the off, and both girls took advantage of being set free from the off as they threw shot after shot.

Seinna was doing well with her straights shots, while Mya was showing great head movement. At as the bout went on Seinna was more comfortable on the back foot, allowing Mya to throw then counter her shots.

It was another great contest to kick the night;s proceedings off, and after a four-hour hour round trip to Coventry the boxers did MBBC proud.

MBBC were then in action the following week, as they competed at the National Youth Championships taking place in Tameside.

Sam Coates was in action in the quarter-final, facing Luke McMullen from Technique ABC. Luke was a decent kid with plenty of experience, and as they squared up Luke towered above Sam.

The bell rang for round one and Luke took his southpaw stance. Sam tried to jab and outbox Luke but with his height and reach he wasn’t having much success.

Nevertheless he kept going, but Luke was using his advantages and catching Sam at will. Sam sucked it up and carried on, but it was pretty much the same in the second as the coaches encouraged a more aggressive attack.

After strong words at the end of the second, Sam came out for the third and the boxing went out the window, with the work rate and number of blows thrown increased.

This proved the key to swing the advantage the other way and Sam had a brilliant third round, dominating throughout, but unfortunately it was to little too late, and had he shown the hunger he showed in the third round earlier in the bout, the result may have been different.

It was Luke McCullen who impressed the judges and as such he took the victory and moves on to the semi-finals, with MBBC wishing him all the best after putting on a valiant display.
