A snapshot of childhood gives Kari worldwide hit
APHOTOGRAPHER has received worldwide recognition for one of her images after receiving inspiration from her childhood in Macclesfield.
Professional photographer Kari Sellars, 39, has been successful in the Monochrome Awards competition, which in 2019 attracted almost 6,000 submissions from snappers across the world showing the best in black and white photography.
Kari’s portrait image ‘Suburban Warrior 2’ was published and given an honourable mention by the judges, something Kari said ‘gave me one of my proudest photography moments to date’.
Kari, who attended Gawsworth Primary School and Fallibroome Academy, has been taking photographs seriously for six years and set up her own family, maternity, child and newborn photography business months ago.
She said: “Photographs have always had an important place in my life, but my passion for photographing began shortly after the birth of my daughter five years ago.
“As child growing up I would spend countless hours poring over our substantial box of family photographs, particularly those from my early childhood.
“I was transported back
18 to a less complicated time, where unconditional love and carefree days were king.”
On the winning entry, which was taken at a nature reserve in Mobberley she said: “I am so proud of this image, the model is a close friend.
“He takes no prisoners and is the epitome of a tough young lad, a modern day suburban warrior, ready to take on the world.
“When I received an email announcing that the winners of the awards had been selected I felt disappointment that my photographs obviously hadn’t made the grade.
“But then I clicked on the link to see who the prize winners were, and there it was, ‘ Suburban Warrior 2’ my photograph, among the work of talented, professional photographers from all over the world.”
For the competition Kari submitted three of her child portraits.
It was her first entry in a photography competition.
On using black and white in her photography, Kari, who now lives in Macclesfield, said: “Obviously I work in colour too but I think there is something bold and timeless about black and white.
“With clients I try to give an option in monochrome and often those are the images they choose.”
