Coates back to winning ways

- BOXING

IT was another busy week for MBBC as they had a number of boxers competing on several shows recently.

Their week began last Saturday, when they competed on a show put together by South Normanton ABC at The Post Mill Centre.

Rocky Maguire was in action, making his debut in his first proper contest. Having had a few skills bouts, the Macc coaches felt it was time for him to step up.

Rocky’s opponent was Alfie Begg from the home club, who was a nice southpaw boxer, and as the bell rang for round one they hit the ground running.

Both kids were giving it their all and they were both having success, but Rocky was scoring some clean shots throughout the first whilst only being caught once or twice himself.

Round two was much of the same and the feeling in the corner was a win was coming, so feeling confident going to round three Rocky kept the pressure on catching Alfie again.

With the more consistent accurate punches the Macc coaches felt they surely had this one in the bag. As the bell went the refreree brought the two boxers to the centre and it was a split decision win in favour of the home boxer.

The Macc coaches were extremely frustrated with the decision, and had to console a young boxer who they felt had clearly won.

Rocky he took it in his stride and will return to action on the MBBC home show taking place at the Wilmslow Leisure Centre on Friday.

Another recent show that MBBC competed on was put together by Bowden All Powers ABC and took place at the Alma Lodge in Stockport.

They had three boxers in action, and first up was

Finn Tresson against Ardwick Lads boxer Antony McDonagh in a skills bout. As they touched gloves for the start of round one McDonagh towered over young Finn, but this didn’t stop him from giving his all by throwing the jabs in the first.

They both looked good with Finn showing a nice tight guard. The second round was straight one twos only and again both kids moved around the ring but McDonagh was a bit stronger than Finn and was controlling his shots more.

They both threw plenty of shots and looked great in there, and then in round three was where they can throw anything. They boxed really well in a back and forth contest with no winners and no losers, so it was a great learning curve for both.

Next up was Max Winder, making his debut against Kayden Miah from the host club. This was another skills bout and straight from the off Max was in and out with sharp fast shots, catching his opponent at will.

Kayden was no pushover and kept with Max throughout round one, and round two saw the straight lead and backhand being thrown which suited Max again as he used the phased attacks to get in there and score the points.

He was absolutely on fire and loving every minute, and while Kayden had some success as well, Max was clearly dominating.

In round three anything goes and this was by far

Max’s best round as he slipped shots and was throwing the counter. He used the ring in and out catching with some nice shots at close range and at distance, in what turned out to be a brilliant contest.

It was a great warm up fight as Max makes the transition to a full bout on the MBBC home show at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on Friday.

Last up for MBBC was Sam Coates, and having lost in the National Championships the previous week he was looking to get back to winning ways.

His opponent was Harrison Hall from Bowden All Powers, and from the start Coates applied pressure. Harrison was no pushover, working off the back foot and he’d counter, then catching with some clean shots.

Coates was relentless and pushed forward, throwing shot after shot and cutting the ring down, making Harrison work hard.

Towards the end of each round Sam’s fitness gave him the edge as Harrison tired.

This was an absolute cracker off a contest with both lads looking good throughout, but when the final bell rang it was Sam that looked fresh and ready to go again.

Harrison felt he had done enough to earn the win, but the work-rate and determination of Coates obviously caught the eye off the judges as he was awarded victory by unanimous decision.

It was a fantastic contest and a good win for Coates, and the Macc coaches wanted to thank all the boxers that showed the courage to enter the ring along with all of the parents that showed their support.
