Pancake rivals in market for big race

- ALEX SCAPENS

THE excitement is simmering as entrants prepare for the ups and downs of the annual Macclesfield Pancake Races.

The event takes place on the Market Place, in the town centre, on Shrove Tuesday - February 25.

Organisers are inviting businesses, clubs and community groups to enter a team to compete for the coveted trophy.

But the races are also about fun and raising money for ECHO, the hospital and community healthcare charity.

Last year a record 18 teams entered and it is hoped that 2020 can see even more take part.

Fiona Doorey, ECHO’s fundraising manager, said: “Registration is open and organisers are now looking for more teams to join in and have a flipping good time.

”This year the organisers want to beat that record and raise even more money, appealing for more teams to join in and support this fantastic community tradition and fundraiser.”

Teams race up and down a short course on Mill Street from outside the old town hall to just past the Grosvenor Centre entrance.

ECHO, the official charity of East Cheshire NHS Trust, has launched a campaign to raise £45,000 for a new wheelchairaccessible discharge minibus.

It will help patients, many of whom are elderly, return home after a hospital stay without being reliant on public transport.

Julie Green, from East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “The discharge bus is essential for the ongoing health and wellbeing of our patients when they are ready to go home.

“We are appealing to the public across eastern Cheshire to help us to raise the £45,000 and would be delighted to hear how you support your local trust, be it through events large or small, every penny counts. Thank you for supporting ECHO.”

As well as the Macclesfield Pancake Races there will be a book stall in Macclesfield Hospital’s main reception on World Book Day, March 5, to start the fundraising.

Anyone wanting to find out more can call Abi Sherratt on 01625 661184.

To enter the pancake races call (01625) 661184 or email ecntstaff. comms@nhs.net. The cost is £20 per team and there is no minimum sponsorship amount.

Registration is at 10.30am, with the first race starting around 11am and an expected 12.30pm finish.

Fancy dress is optional, pans and pancakes will be provided and the Rotary Club of Macclesfield Castle will be helping steward the event.
