Self-denial being good for us – who knew?

-

“AN additional bin, an aid provided to help our move towards recycle, re-use?

Society is trending recycling, mental health, mindfulness and intermittent fasting as the way forward.

‘A compost bin in my kitchen? You must be joking!’, an overheard conversation which is an accurate description of where so many people are in reality.

Everyone recognises the need to act responsibly in the use of our planet, but not everyone wants to accept the conclusion that it means some change in our own lifestyle.

A common excuse for not doing much is ‘big business’ needs to change, and the feeling that what little we can do may not be important.

In reality big business is in the market to sell and if we stop buying, then they will change. Most of us cannot afford to make major changes in the way in which we eat or buy clothes but we can all start to be aware of the need to change.

As a country it is estimated that we spend more on dieting than food.

This is the time of the year for looking forward and planning for the future. As the say, ‘spring is in the air’ and there is a sense of relief as we see the early morning light becoming earlier and brighter.

The daylight hours lengthening (incidentally ‘lengthening’ is the origin of the word Lent), helps us look forward.

Lent traditionally has been a time to consider giving something up, and spending time becoming aware of the whole person.

Society is trending ecology, intermittent fasting and mindfulness.

When they were just respect for Creation, self denial and meditation before re-branding, who knew they were good for us?”
