MBBC put on a stunning show

- BOXING

MBBC recently held their annual boxing event in front of a packed crowd, with 16 bouts on display in what was a superb night of action.

The first business of the night was to call all the boxers in the ring who had carried out a vigorous eight week training routine over Christmas, watching their weight and focusing on the show.

Unfortunately not every boxer could box on the night, so MBBC’s and GB’s Olympic prospect Karriss Artingstall was introduced to the audience and she was more than pleased to hand out trophies on behalf of the club to young boxers Archie Dale, Tom Cowan, Harry Szmit, Rubi Smallwood, Sienna Bircham, Finnly Tresson, and Harley Howard.

These kids had put so much hard work and commitment that they needed to know it had not gone unnoticed by the MBBC coaching team.

Bout one was a skills contest between Mia King from MBBC and Katie Mawdsley from Hook and Jab ABC from Warrington, who had only taken the bout on Thursday.

This was Mia’s first contest and she did absolutely great. Katie had competed in three skills bouts and it showed when she was boxing, but Mia held her own and it was a brilliant start to the night.

Bout two was Oakley Roberts from MBBC vs M Maughan from Paramount ABC in Stockport. Maughan was a bit shorter than Roberts and tended to push forward, putting pressure on Roberts which he found difficult in the first round but with a bit of advice from the corner he was able to work a bit better in the second, coming on stronger in the third.

Both kids gave it their all and it was another terrific skills bout.

Bout three saw Rocky Maguire raring to go with lots of support in attendance as he took on Liverpool kid K O’Shea from Old Swan ABC.

Oshea started off well, looking very sharp and fast but once Rocky started to settle and throw some shots O’Shea started to fade a bit whereas Rocky started to increase with great head movement and some quality shots. This was a great bout for Rocky and a unanimous win for MBBC.

Bout four was Max Winder from MBBC, as he took part in his first proper bout against J Readle from the Old Swan ABC in Liverpool.

As they touched gloves Readle was short and stocky in comparison to Max, but this was a superb display of boxing from Max Winder as he picked his shots, moved around the ring well and dominated his opponent throughout.

It was an absolute class act against a tough opponent who took some shots and stayed with it until the end but another unanimous win for MBBC.

Bout five was George Oliver facing Arran Fieldhouse from Tameside Elite. George was composed and picked his shots, working hard when required and rested when he needed to.

Arran was no pushover and came back with shots every time, but George’s accuracy was now taking its toll as Arran’s nose was bleeding.

The referee gave it a wipe but George came on strong in the third to secure MBBC’s third unanimous win after a great display from George Oliver, who later on secured the belt for the boxer of the night.

Bout six was

Oliver

Hand taking on J Burns from Tameside Elite. Oliver impressed from the start with his accuracy and work rate as he picked Burns off from the start.

Burns was strong and kept coming forward as Olly threw off the back foot catching every time. He came back to the corner and listened to every instruction, before going back out and implementing them, helping to earn another unanimous win.

Bout seven was Mckenzie Darricote facing Paramount boxer R Borrel. This kid was heavier and more experienced than Darricote, but the MBBC coaches had every confidence in their man to deliver and that’s exactly what he did with a composed, confident display.

He produced phased attacks in and out and although he got pulled up a couple of times for not turning his knuckles in, he dominated this bout and brought home another unanimous win for the club.

Bout eight was Noel Straw in with Josh Kelly from Ardwick Lads. The MBBC coaches knew it was going to be good contest and it didn’t disappoint.

Kelly had his southpaw stance throwing fast hands, and Straw with his aggressive come forward approach was the only way to deal with it.

This was a great display of quality boxing from both kids, with Straw cutting the ring down and Kelly showing great skill. There were no complaints as the judges saw it Kelly’s way, in what was MBBC’s first loss of the night.
