Events axed as fears increase

- ALEX SCAPENS

PUBLIC events in Macclesfield have been cancelled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Macclesfield Town Council has confirmed the Easter trail and St George’s Day parade have been axed as well as youth Street Sports, Pram Fit and Park Fit sessions ‘for the time being’.

The beer festival has been cancelled and, while no decision has yet been taken on VE Day celebrations in South Park on May 8, these are now under review.

Pete Turner, town clerk of Macclesfield, said: “Unfortunately we have had to take some difficult decisions relating to events and services.

”We’re very worried that this will continue and affect other events and activities, particularly the VE Day celebrations.

“It’s under constant review and awaits clear guidance ment.

“The town council is constantly reviewing the everchanging and evolving situation and how this might affect services and administration of the council.”

The town council’s staff are now working from home if they can and meetings will take place remotely where possible.

Formal public meetings are being reviewed and are currently planned to go ahead with social distancing and easy access hand washing facilities.

But any decisions will take into account whether or not at risk groups will be attending.

Mr Turner added: “We are particularly concerned about vulnerable and at risk residents in the town and ask that we all take a little time to help neighbours, family and friends who might be isolated.

“We are also asking that people have consideration for others when shopping and have a responsible attitude to personal contact,

Organisers have also confirmed that the Treacle Market event at Macclesfield Market Place on Sunday, March 29, has been cancelled because of coronavirus fears.

But instead it is hoped there will be a virtual event on Facebook on the same day.

Jane Munro said: “In nearly 10 years of market trading we have never cancelled before but feel we must all do our part in restricting the spread of coronavirus and cannot bring people together en masse.

“This decision will have a profound impact on the small businesses who trade at Treacle generating a part of their monthly income.

“We will be promoting them on social media and hope our loyal followers will choose to support these creative producers by buying mail order from them or purchasing vouchers.

“Please follow us on social media to keep connected with Treacle, it’s traders and tight knit community.”
