AHOST of celebrities turned out at a star-studded bash in support of the Christie.

Famous faces at the event, held at Manchester’s Principal Hotel, included the ex-Coronation Street favourite Katie McGlynn - whose character Sinead died from cancer - in the show.

She was joined by Gogglebox’s Julie Malone, the Apprentice’s Lewis Ellis and Hollyoaks stars Connor Calland (plays Jordan Price) and Eva O’Hara (aka Verity Hutchinson).

Packy Lee, who stars as Johnny Doggs in the hit TV series Peaky Blinders, played a DJ set.

The Christie will open a new cancer centre in Macclesfield next year and is also building a research facility in Manchester that will contribute to all its sites.

It will cost £150m and is to replace the Paterson building, which was extensively damaged by fire in 2017.

At the event there was entertainment, a slap-up meal and an auction with prizes including a tour of the Peaky Blinders set, a Tunnel Club experience at Manchester City and a tour of Michael Owen’s racing stables.

Professor Tim Somervaille, who is a consultant in haematological oncology at the Christie, said afterwards: “The ball was an amazing success, one of the best yet, and we are hugely grateful to all our guests and supporters who made this possible.

“It is vital for the future of cancer research that we are able to build this new centre so that more people can benefit by bringing together the largest concentration of scientists, doctors and nurses in Europe.

“This will allow these specialists to collaborate and accelerate progress for cancer patients.”

The event was sponsored by the fashion retailer AX Paris and construction company Seddons.
