WILMSLOW Golf Club Captain Alan Clarke has been a member of his club for 30 enjoyable years and he is relishing his new role.

Alan said: “We have hosted many top competitions at Wilmslow over the years and it was very disappointing to see the postponement of the Wilmslow Foursome, which had a stellar field but I am sure that it will grow and become a serious recognised event. My hobbies other than golf are horse racing and supporting Tottenham Hotspur and my own personal golfing highlight is having four ‘Twos’ in one round in my club in London.

“My chosen charity for my Captain’s year is the

Wythenshawe

Thoracic Unit.

“My dream four-ball to play in would be with Tiger Woods, the world’s greatest golfer. Peter Alliss who I imagine would be great company and Donald Trump who would enable us to get on any course in the world!!!”

Jonas Urbonas, who hails from Lithuania and now lives in Manchester, gained the inspiration to set up Orfi Active (Organise and Find) from his own experience of being an immigrant and not being able to find people or places to play basketball as it’s not a popular sport in this country.

Jonas said: “Throughout the years I have found that that’s the case with a lot of other sports and fitness activities, so I decided to create a platform where people can discover and easily join a variety of activities, some they’ve never even heard of.

“We have already seen sports like basketball, korfball, VX, Ludosport, softball and others benefiting from our service, and this is just the very beginning.

“We aim to get more people, more active and more often into other sports such as golf, football, cricket, and bowls and any others that I may not have heard of.

“Orfi Active is an app that allows people to easily create, manage, discover and join a variety of sports and fitness activities around them .

“We are on a mission to get more people active and healthy by making sports participation a lot more accessible and the main features include map search, in app payments. push notifications, waiting lists, recurring events, player management etc and more.

“There is no charge for clubs to use the app to display their details and the best email contact to find out more about us is jonas@orfiactive.com and on any social media outlets we are @orfiactive.com.”

The Repair Shop is a popular BBC TV programme in which various experts take on challenges to repair and restore items presented to them by members of the public.

Earlier this year the Balfour and Houldsworth Committee submitted an application to have the lids of the Balfour and the Houldsworth trophies repaired.

These historic and valuable golf trophies are just over 123 years old and have been played for every year since 1897, apart from the years of the first and second World Wars.

It would appear that the lids have been damaged when they became detached from the trophies, as the winners celebrated their achievements at the presentations.

B and H secretary David Haley said: “I had to supply the programme with plenty of answers to detailed questions about the history of the trophies and repairs needed.

“Hopefully the answers I provided with reports, photos and a short video will get us on to the programme and have these superb trophies restored to their original glory.

“For more details on the 2020 competitions for the Balfour Cup, the Houldsworth Cup, the GS Lancashire Trophy and the Balfour Seniors cup check out the website www.balfourandhouldsworth. co.uk.”
