One arrest as pubs emerge from lockdown

-

THE reopening of pubs, bars and restaurants in Macclesfield passed off relatively peacefully with just one arrest over the weekend.

Police arrested a person on Newton Street, in the town centre, for drunk and disorderly.

It was one of just 10 across Cheshire this weekend that were linked to the night time economy.

Superintendent Julie Westgate, from Cheshire Police, said: “There has been lots of coverage regarding the reopening of licenced premises from 4 July and fortunately this passed relatively peacefully.

“While there were a small number of isolated incidents linked to the night time economy, the overwhelming majority of people behaved responsibly and adhered to the Covid-19 restrictions that remain in place. I would like to thank everyone who helped to play their part in continuing in keeping the people of Cheshire safe. It was also encouraging to see the measures put in place by licensees to keep their customers as safe as possible.”

Supt Westgate pledged officers would use ‘common sense and discretion’ when dealing with the public, only taking enforcement action as a ‘last resort’.
