‘Relief road storage plan is same one I had rejected’ What’s changed?’ asks site owner

- ALEX SCAPENS

CLAIMS have been made a council planning application that is part of the Poynton Relief Road project is the ‘same’ as one from a member of the public already refused.

Cheshire East Council’s highways team has submitted proposals to use land near Adlington Business Park for storing surplus material removed in the road’s construction.

A council planning committee will rule on the temporary application at a meeting this week.

But Simon Gleave, owner of a builders storage site opposite the proposed location, has complained saying the current application is no different in planning terms to his that was turned down.

He had wanted to put a storage unit on his site in 2018 but was refused.

Mr Gleave’s wrote to the council saying: “I own the site opposite (and) use the same road to access my site.

”In 2018 I made an application for my site, one of the refusal points was that the road was not suitable for HGVs, the same road you are proposing to use to facilitate the construction of the Poynton Relief Road.

”Can you please advise what has changed since my application?”

Upon refusal of this application Cheshire East planners listed ‘threat to the delivery of the Poynton Relief Road’, impact on a bridleway and the road being too narrow.

The decision was upheld at appeal.

Adlington Parish Council has objected to the latest plans saying approval would be ‘inconsistent with previous sions’.

The objection stated: “One of the main reasons that (Mr Gleave) was refused planning permission was on the grounds of highways safety in respect of the access route, which is the same route to be used.”

The issue is the road is 5m wide but needs to be 7.3m to accommodate HGVs. It is also used by pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

The Poynton Relief Road, which already has planning permission, will be 3km long and work is expected to begin this year and finish in August 2022.

As part of this approval an area for material storage was designated but the council now wants to move it to this new site, which measures nearly two hectares. Once construction of the road is completed the area will be returned to

deciopen grassland. The council has bought the land from Adlington Golf Centre, which is continuing to use it until construction work starts.

In a planning statement to support the application, a council spokesman said: “The proposed development is unlikely to have any significant impact on the environment and is in compliance with national and local planning policy.

“Overall, this proposed alternative temporary material storage site is considered to be a suitable and acceptable use of the site, and is necessary for the delivery of the approved (relief road) scheme.”

The £50m Poynton Relief Road will connect with the Manchester Airport Relief Road and is predicted to bring economic benefits to the area, ease congestion and improve air quality.
