Silkmen honour ‘dedicated’ Alan

- ALEX SCAPENS

AMACCLESFIELD Town programme seller who became a chairman at the Moss Rose has been honoured for 50 years of service to the club.

Alan Cash, 88, first became involved with the Silkmen in August 1970 when he moved to the town from his native Manchester.

His first role was selling the match day magazine, which the following season he helped produce alongside pal Len Lee.

Soon after that he became football secretary for the club, followed by company secretary, then in 1975 club director.

Alan took on the role of finance director until 1996, when he was elected club chairman in the wake of the tragic death of Arthur Jones.

It was under his stewardship that the Silkmen first won promotion to the Football League in 1997 with Sammy McIlroy as manager.

Despite retiring from the board in 2005, Alan remains heavily involved with Macc’s Football in the Community scheme, its youth team and is a founding director of the Community Sports Trust.

In marking his five decades with the Silkmen, which included a twoyear return to the board in 2013, the club has paid tribute to all this work.

A club spokesman said: “For the last half a century, Alan Cash has given the club a wealth of support and expertise across a number of roles.

“Alan remains as dedicated and as passionate as ever to promote youth football within Macclesfield.

“Everyone at Macclesfield Town would like to thank Alan for his phenomenal contribution to our football club over the past five decades.

“Not only has he helped write our history, but he continues to shape our future with the same contagious enthusiasm that he held whilst selling programmes fifty years ago.”

Alan lives in Bosley with his wife Pauline.

His grandaughter Beth Cash says the presence of such loyal supporters is even more vital at a time of great upheaval at the Moss Rose.

She said: “He is very dedicated, every Tuesday and Saturday he is at the boardroom.

“It is very important, he does so much behind the scenes and the club wouldn’t run as well without him.

“I am so proud of him and what he does and it was amazing for him to be appreciated, he was really touched.”
